Black Political Thought: Billy Maxwell, Jr, Fayetteville, NC Businessman, Murders His Wife, Kathryn and Two Teenage Children, in Apparent Murder-Suicide

  • guest · 1 month ago
i also believe that the bible says God is the judge, not you. there are many reasons, including mental illness or a bad reaction to medication that could have taken a good man off the right path without making him "not a good christian." in fact, the bad christian here sounds like you. love the sinner, hate the sin. don't slander this poor family before all the facts are in.
  • Janet Shan · 1 month ago
Anyone who kills their entire family does not deserve to be given a pass. He was wrong. I did not slander his family. I quite clearly stated that my comments were directed at him. Again, this man had no right to kill his entire family. There is NO justification for what he did. It is horrible that as a Christian, this is the way he chose to end his family's life. His wife and children did not deserve this.
  • Kevin · 1 month ago
You say "I don't want to throw cold water on the family of the victims, but what in the world could have driven this man to take the lives of his wife and children?", almost implying that something they did might have been so bad that it caused him to do this.

And does the Bible speak of not killing? yes, but so does EVERY OTHER religion, so what's your point?
  • Janet Shan · 1 month ago
Kevin -- You are deluded into thinking that I am suggesting that Mr.
Maxwell's wife and children did something to deserve being murdered by the
head of their household. At no time did I make that implication. Just like
the devout Muslims who killed thousands on Sept. 11 and the countless others
in the Middle East, it still doesn't make it right.
  • jl · 1 month ago
i knew this family very well, i grew up with connor. we went to the same elementary school and middle school. our mother's were friends and our father's were friends. nothing could ever drive mr. billy in his right mind to kill his family. he loved them. it's absolutely impossible for this to happen without him being mentally ill or on heavy medication. may you all rest in peace and i have no doubt that you ALL are in heaven. see you all one day once more.
  • vanessa · 1 month ago
I am so sorry to inform you that I see nothing in the Bible that says Mr. Billy gets a free pass to heaven. He not only sinned by murdering himself but also murdered 3 other people.I wish I could find where there are excemptions to sin but so far it is not there. If you find such a scripture please loet me know. vanessa

Billy was a devout Christian. The Bible PLAINLY explains he will be granted the gift of Heaven. This was the purpose of Jesus. Everyone sins and no sin is greater than another, as crazy as it sounds. The Bible states this in several places.
  • Orthodox Christianity · 2 weeks ago
The Bible does not plainly say that. It *is* crazy to say that all sins are equal. The Bible does not say that. Come to the truth of Christ. Christ did not come to write a book. He came to establish a Church. That Church still exists--the Orthodox Christian Church. Read the website I linked below for more. http://www.orthodoxinfo.com
  • lumbeejay · 2 weeks ago
But the Bible also said that no sin would enter into heaven, so unless he asked for forgiveness before he died...he won't make it in
  • Karen · 1 month ago
I know Billy. it was not him who did this. it was the devil. I don't understand it, only God knows. don't judge a man you do not know
  • Karen · 1 month ago
Everything that has been reported about Billy is true. He loved his family. He was a good man. This horrible action was not him. I grew up with Billy and if anyone reads info from people who knew the family they will understand what a tragedy this is
  • A frustrated friend · 1 month ago
No one can speak to these peoples lives. We can only pray for their friends and families and know that Cameron, Connor and Kathryn are in a better place. The bible also speaks to the fact that "He who is without sin...Cast the first stone."
  • Orthodox Christianity · 2 weeks ago
We should also pray for the dead that God will forgive all their sins, since the Bible clearly teaches we should pray for the dead (2 Maccabees 12:42-45)
  • Taylor · 1 month ago
to KAREN! "don't judge a man you do not know".. he killed his whole family so yes people are going to judge him.. he should of just killed himself instead of taking the lives of people around him. he will burn in hell for this.

    Taylor
  • Janet Shan · 1 month ago
Taylor -- That has been my position all along, but you have fanatics like
Karen who will expect the vast majority of us to ignore the fact that he
killed his entire family. If he was so despondent over some issue in his
life, he should have just taken his, not his family.
  • Dennis · 1 month ago
My God, why does everyone want to defend this dog. If he were a Muslim, it would be more proof of how evil there religion is. No judgement there, right? It was a Christian. It was a human. It was evil. He is low and dispicible. If he is in Heaven, I certainly don't want to go. He without sin casting stones? How about he who has not murdered his family can still SEE. You would not defend this dog if it were your daughter and son that he killed.
  • Joshua A. · 1 month ago
You are judging. God says the judges of others will have a heavier punishment. He won't go to hell, because he was saved.
  • Janet Shan · 1 month ago
Joshua -- That is a ridiculous line of reasoning that is not worthy of a
    comment.
  • Not Disclosed · 1 month ago
Listen, I knew the family well. I do not wish to disclose any personal information but feel the need to defend Billy. He WAS a devout christian. What you do not know is his history with a mental illness. So, when the media releases it's information do not be so quick to judge and start flapping your mouth about your ever so important opinion on the situation you truly know nothing about. Save your opinion for something in which you have full knowledge on...it is no surprise to most Americans that the media does not always capture the "whole" story...and perhaps it's not even any of the rest of the world's business. Are you curious and devoting all of your time to blog because you care?
  • Janet Shan · 1 month ago
Angela K Sweet -- Again, your friend murdered his wife and his kids. I think
that pretty much sums up what type of person he really was. There is no
excuse for what he did and there is not "whole story" that could possibly
justify such a heinous crime. What I choose to write on my blog is my
business. The First Amendment affords me the right to write and say what I
please. Again, there is NO justification for what Billy Maxwell did to his
    wife and kids.

    Janet Shan
  • Guest · 1 month ago
And what type of person does this make you? Bashing a man who is no longer on this earth...you really should look at YOUR Christian values because while God does not approve of killing...He does approve of speaking badly about they dead.
  • Janet Shan · 1 month ago
Real Rug Rat -- Again, there's no justification for what he did. What type
of person does this make you? Hey, I didn't pull the trigger and wipe out my
    husband and kids.

Isn't freedom of speech a great right to have! Waaaa! Waaaa!

    Janet
  • Guest · 1 month ago
Freedom of speech is great to have because we are all able to give our views. It is sad you still believe how you feel after all everyone has been trying to tell you. It is okay though...God is the only one that judges. I'm not judging you for what you have said...just heartbroken for the families involved that have to read what you wrote.
  • Janet Shan · 1 month ago
Real Rug Rat -- Your responses are bordering on comedic. I am surprised you
don't have a headache spinning this yarn.
  • vanessa · 1 month ago
I also know the facts about Billy Maxwell and I care very deeply. I see no way their families can ever recover from this untold agony they are living. I also know his actions were part self preservation therefore giving him no free Get Out Of Jail card for taking the lives of 3 other people,2 of whom were just beginning to live their life. One he hunted down like an animal he was on the hunt for in the wild..Her horror must have been beyond belief. I just wish we could turn back time, change the events as if it never happened.
  • Janet Shan · 1 month ago
Vanessa -- Thank you for your comments! I had to block a few zealots from
commenting on my blog because they are trying to justify his despicable
behavior. There is simply no explanation that could satisfy anyone in their
right minds as to why this man killed his entire family.
  • guest · 1 month ago
You are completely mistaken. Mr billy was sick. i knew the entire family very well. He was an extremely committed christian, and he LOVED god. i may only be a high school student, but i was also very close to this family. he thought what he was doing was right. everyone who knew him knew about what was going on in his head. and by the way, whoever you are, god thinks of all sins as equal, which means murder is equal with gossiping with which you have no business speaking of. so please, quit slandering his name, i have no doubt in my mind that all four of them are in heaven with the lord.
  • Janet Shan · 1 month ago
Caitlin -- Gee, I wonder how you feel about his business associate's
comments that there was discord occurring in his home up until he committed
these unspeakable acts of crime. I'm slandering his name? Wow. It seems that
he laid the groundwork to be criticized for killing his family. Again, he's
a coward for taking the easy way out. His family did not deserve the fate
they met. Don't preach to me. You should have preached to your so-called
    "Christian" friend.
  • guest · 1 month ago
Unlike my friend josh, who also knew the family, I cannot and will not sit back and watch you mutinize mr maxwells name. I will preach to whoever I feel like. I pity you, because you are a old woman, who enjoys blogging about things that dont concern you. You do not go to our church, and you do not live in our city. so leave OUR issues to US. unless you personally knew what was going on with the family, or you know EVERY single detail, or you so magically happen to be god (which you cant be because you are a vindictive woman) then LET IT BE.
  • Janet Shan · 1 month ago
Caitlin -- You are an imbecile. For your information, I am 42 years old, a
mother and a wife, a small business owner and the owner of a non-profit
organization. I also have a MBA, two Bachelor's degree and working on my
doctorate. From the level of your argument, your ignorance is ever so
    evident.

Hey, I didn't shoot my husband and kids. Your so-called friend did and
since I seriously doubt you have been appointed the "spokesperson" for this
family, you need to take your BS else. No-one forced you to read what I
wrote, but I will tell you this, I don't have to put up with your comments.

So, your insults will only result in you being blocked from commenting on my
    blog.

I don't personally know him, all of my friends do. You don't understand the situation. It's one thing to state an opinion, but don't bash on someone or what someone else has said. I'm sure in his right mind Billy was a good man. But like people who have gotten off of death row for murder because of "mental sicknesses" this is the same thing. You hurt other people for being so insensitive..
  • blackpoliticalthought · 1 month ago
Curious why this is on "blackpoliticalthought". He wasn't black and this topic has nothing to do with politics.

Oh, I hope you're making great money off the page views you're getting for the ads.

Tony -- This isn't what this discussion thread is about.
  • Josh A. · 1 month ago
Janet- You obviously live in a box. You said he's not a "Christian" but God still loves him. Hatee the Sin, Love the sinner. Quite frankly, you are a religious person. By that I mean you try to do good deeds to make up for your sin. You apparently think he is Going to Hell, and thus, he wasn't a Christian, but he was. There IS a thing called Clinical Psychosis and that is what is believed to have happened to him.
  • Janet Shan · 1 month ago
Josh -- I don't care how you want to spin this. I never said that God
doesn't love this man. He loves us all, but He also never said sin would go
unpunished. Lastly, if this happened to your relatives, I seriously doubt
you would enter the spin zone with your yarn about psychosis. It still
doesn't make it right. Are you the coroner and a part of the medical team in
    this case?

I would walk away from my children before putting a gun to their heads. I
could NEVER hurt my children, much less murder them.

Lastly, Mr. Maxwell cannot make up for the mess he has caused and the
anguish he left his family and his in-laws in.

What am I? A manwith a Horrid past. A Family Friend. A Psychology Student. Perchance did you know Mr. MAxwell had been hallucinating, haveing Paranoia attacks, and thought his family was being watched and targeted by the govt.? No, you didn't. He went insane. I'm not trying to spin this anyway, that is your job, gossiper. I'm stating facts, and you aren't being very Christian. You are being religious, the OPPOSITE of Christianity.

"Lastly, if this happened to your relatives, I seriously doubt
you would enter the spin zone with your yarn about psychosis."
"Lastly, Mr. Maxwell cannot make up for the mess he has caused and the
anguish he left his family and his in-laws in."

Well gee, I'd be hurt. But, Guess what? The family STILL loves him.
And It's not a yarn it's serious. I would say he went insane. Did you know the family had come over that day to try and help him past his issues? So pleases, If you love God, stop this foolishness. To God all sins are equal. LAst I checked, Judging and Gossip are two sins, and Homicide and Suicide are two sins. Your sins are as bad as his to God.
  • Janet Shan · 1 month ago
Josh -- Again, Mr. Maxwell had NO right to take the lives of his wife and
children. I don't care how you try to spin this. You have your views and I
have mine. From what I have read, the medical examiner and all the medical
professionals, as well as the investigators haven't disclosed any of Mr.
Maxwell's medical problems, so I take it like a grain of salt coming from
you. Unless you are an "official and verifiable" spokesperson for the
family, your positions about his condition is falling on deaf ears where I
    am concerned.

Also, your Biblical truths are going no where with me. I am a Christian, but
I also know that committing suicide and murder is a sin. The Bible never
said that God wouldn't forgive, but it is also very clear about punishment
    for the sin.

This is the last comment I will make to you about this. It is ridiculous to
go back and forth, especially when I don't intend to change my position one
    iota.

you have absolutely no right to be talking about Mr. Maxwell like this.... You have never met the man but yet you are talking about how awful he is... I knew him and just like alot of others in Fayetteville we are depressed by how you guys are treating him.. Billy was one of the strongest christians you would ever meet.. that man that night was not Billy it was a monster who had taken him over... So before you throw stones at him at least know him... I think the bible also talks about that God is the only one who can pass judgment and what are you doing.
  • Janet Shan · 1 month ago
Sarah -- You have absolutely no right to tell me what to write on my own
blog. There's a thing called freedom of speech afforded to you and I under
the Constitution of America. Now, Mr. Maxwell had NO right to take the lives
of his wife and children. There was no justification for what he did and you
can spin this all you want, it was still WRONG.
If Billy Maxwell was such a strong Christian, he would have heeded the
assistance of his close friend and turned to God for help to fight whatever
ailed him. Taking the life of his wife and children is not the solution to
    ANY problem.

Did you know this family? Did you know Mr. Maxwell? You say your comments are not directed at him...but this whole article is directed at him and your continuing comments are directed at him.

"this man had no right to kill his entire family. There is NO justification for what he did. It is horrible that as a Christian, this is the way he chose to end his family's life."

Please keep your insensitive thoughts about this family to yourself. Pray for this family but do not verbally bash something you know nothing about. And please do not compare Mr. Maxwell to a terrorist. Those who knew him, know that he was anything but. I suggest you take a look in the mirror and go for some deep soul searching for the comments you have said about this man and his family. No one is saying that what he did was right. We are saying that he was an ill man and does not deserve public bashing. God is the ultimate judge...not you. So if this is your way to get 'noticed', try something else...because all you've done is make people angry and NOT want to read your posts.
  • Janet Shan · 1 month ago
Real Rug Rat -- Again, he had NO right to kill his entire family. There is
not justification or rationalization for this unspeakable act.
  • Guest · 1 month ago
I have to ask....if Mr. Maxwell was African American, would he be under the same scrutiny? Or would you think he was an innocent man who the media is exploiting because of the color of his skin? I didn't realize we were stuck in the 1950s...get over yourself.
  • Janet Shan · 1 month ago
Real Rug Rat -- Now turning to race is classic on your part. Waaa, waaa. If
you knew anything about the issues I cover, you would realize that I am
equally critical of African Americans who commit similar crimes. In case you
haven't heard, there was a black man in Florida who killed his entire family
and I covered that. Also, there's Mr. Sowell who murdered 11 black women in
his home in Cleveland and that too is on my blog. Where's your sympathy for
these people? I am afraid that it is you who is stuck in the 1950s. You made
the first comment about race ever being an issue in this tragedy. Waaa,
    waaa!
  • Guest · 1 month ago
The reason I brought up race was because of the name of this website. After reading the rest of your articles, I see that you do not discriminate against race. I'm just angry at what you have said about this family. What he did was wrong, no one is arguing that. But to judge him is just saddening to all of us.
  • Janet Shan · 1 month ago
Real Rug Rat -- I will not address the name of my website, which is called
the Hinterland Gazette by the way. This thread has nothing to do with the
name. I am referring to Mr. Maxwell.
  • Janet Shan · 1 month ago
Real Rug Rat -- I didn't say anything about Mr. Maxwell's family. In fact, I
have repeatedly expressed my sympathy for his wife and children because they
did not deserve the hand they were dealt. Maybe he did have a mental
illness, but that still doesn't make it right. If that's the case, then Mr.
Sowell, who murdered 11 women and buried them on his property and kept some
in his home, could also make the case that he has a mental illness and be
given a slap on the wrist and let loose in society to reoffend. There is no
    justification for this.

Taylor -- There's a saying in my native country of Jamaica -- in the patois
dialect -- "see me and come live wid me a two different things." Basically
it says see me in the street and living with me are vastly different. Same
    truth holds here.

What a twist.Billy Maxwell's funeral service will be with his wife and chikdren's service that he murdered. This has to be a first.
  • David · 1 month ago
Just a couple of observations here.

You ask what could have driven the man to take the lives of his wife and children. I presume that question will eventually be answered when the authorities conclude their investigation. Everyone has his/her own religious views concerning murder and suicide, and it isn't my intention to pass judgment on them. I will say, though, that it is premature to speculate on the findings of an investigation that hasn't been completed.

As for freedom of speech, that isn't an unlimited freedom. There are restrictions on it, particularly in the realm of communications law.
  • Janet Shan · 1 month ago
David -- I think it is safe to say that I am afforded the right to my
opinion. The last time I checked this was a democracy. Please don't tell me
about communications law because I have a Journalism degree. Don't insult my
intelligence. What I will say is that I have the right to my opinion. Again,
what Billy Maxwell did was unthinkable and reprehensible. The police have
concluded that it was a murder-suicide. Did I make that up? No. Have you
stopped to read the local newspapers' articles about this tragedy?

I am getting really tired of you and your comments. I wonder, do you leave
these comments on Politico, Crooks & Liars, The Huffington Post, Fayette
Observer, Fox News and CNN websites? I am not going to argue with you about
my right to my opinion. You have yours and I have never presumed to tell you
what and how to think. Don't bring it here.

    Janet,

You seem to have some degree of inteligence considering the degrees you have, so why is it so hard to see that everyone is not saying that what Mr. Maxwell did was right that he had a right to do it? Why is it so hard to understand that they are not trying to justify an evil act? Their love for this man and his family is very strong and all they are saying is that yes he did something wrong but that he had a mental problem which doesn't justify what he did but it does explain it somewhat. Someone said earlier hate the sin not the sinner this statement is so true his act was evil but he is not. As a christians together in christ we should want to confort and help eachother but with the love this entire community still holds for both Mr. Maxwell and his family, why can't you see that your comments only add salt to the wound. I am praying for the Maxwell family and the Snyder community, I will now pray for you so that maybe you will find it in your heart and understand what everyone is trying to say. This is a tragedy that should have never happened but we can't change that, all we can do is come together, comfort each other and try and strengthen the bonds we still have.
  • Janet Shan · 1 month ago
Mandy -- Mental illness doesn't occur overnight. There were signs that were obviously ignored by many. This doesn't not absolve Mr. Maxwell of the killing of his family. Do you have the same sympathy for Andrea Yates, Susan Smith, Ervin Lupoe, among others and Mr. Sowell, the latest case in Cleveland, for example?

Don't pray for me. Worry about yourself.
