Black Political Thought: Black Man Kissing White Woman on Cover of St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Go! Magazine Ruffles Feathers of Bigots

Thanks for taking the time to make some observations about this issue -- and for linking to our "Conversation about Race" blog. We have been trying hard to keep an eye on this discussion. We feel it's best to create a forum for airing these views and giving people a chance to debate them, rather than cover our eyes and ears to distasteful ideas.

If you ever have an interest in guest posting on our blog, I would be pleased to hear more...

Kurt -- No problem. I am incensed that this is still an issue in America, on
both sides, I must add. As I said, from a personal standpoint, I have no
issue with someone finding love in another race. We all want the same things
out of life and have the same ambitions, at least I think so. We shouldn't
sweep this under a rug. We should have some constructive dialogue about the
matter.

The blog is an attempt at a constructive dialog on race issues and I appreciate you recognizing it as such. Does it always succeed? No; is there anything that does? I was saddened by comments here (http://blog.showmeprogress.com/diary/2721/) that cast us as the villains for allowing these comments to be posted in the first place. As we know, there is no way to make everyone happy. :)

Those aren't the only racist comments on stltoday.com--the problem isn't one set of racist comments, it's that the stltoday.com web site is given over to racists every day. Comparing East Saint Louis residents and officials as apes, suggesting that people are jungle bunnies, or talking about black names as being Gods of 40 ouncer are all too common. Why do you continue to allow these people a forum when there's a perfectly good forum for them: Stormfront.
On the flip side, however, there are many blacks who feel the same way as those bigots about interracial relationships and marriages
Janet - I am glad that you rounded off the whole issue because that is where I was going.

There are several Black females in particular who I can think of that would be hopping mad that at a time when finding a good Black mate seems to be at its all time low - the newspaper in St Louis had to present a heterosexual Black man who has the vapors for a White woman.

Your friend and mine's - Spike Lee has very similar condemnation for interracial relationships and has said so on occasion. For some reason he escapes condemnation or placement among the "right wing" spectrum per his views on the issue.

Constructive Feedback -- I won't just point a finger at the white bigots,
there are many among us who despise interracial relationships. I didn't
realize that Spike Lee was against this. Isn't his wife mixed?

For the life of me, I just can't make myself care about a black man and a white woman kissing, especially if I'm not interested in the brotha. It makes my skin crawl when women talk about how white women "stole their men" when it's a man you did NOT want in the first place. Even moreso when a white man does the same thing, or anybody in between. I wish folks would spend more time concentrating on their own relationships instead of worrying about what skin complexion is kissing what skin complexion. Chicago is the most segregated city in the US, but I still see interracial couples regularly on the northside. And again, it doesn't move me either way. I say date who you want.

Hey, wait a minute! Everyone here in St. Louis tells me we're the most segregated city! *wink*

Why isn't he kissing a black woman ?

Hey Steven, she's the one kissing him while grabbing his tie! Why isn't she kissing a white man?

I would like to say that I thought that was a SEXY photo shoot! It was a woman caught up in the moment with feeling like "come here sexy man" and KISS ME! All I can say is those people who had an issue need to GET A FRICKEN LIFE!!!!!!

I love it! And I'm a black man married to a black woman.
